Glenorchy is about 7 kilometres north of the Hobart CBD.

The area runs from New Town Rivulet in the south to the Black Snake Rivulet in the north and features undulating plains, rising steeply in the west to a line of hills.

There are approximately 44,500 people in Glenorchy, enough to qualify for city status.

It is thought Glenorchy was named after a Scottish village on the Orchy River, by Lachlan Macquarie.

Glenorchy is known for two geographic features: The Derwent River and Mount Wellington.

Other attractions include the Cadburys Factory at nearby Claremont, the Alpenrail model railway and Swiss village, Moorilla Vineyard and Restaurant, the Tasmanian Transport Museum and the Royal Hobart Showgrounds.

There are several shopping centres in the area as well as the Derwent Entertainment Centre which is a great venue for large concerts, exhibitions and conferences.

We are the Lions

We meet the needs of our local communities and the world.

Our 1.3 million men and women in 205 countries and geographic areas conduct vision and health screenings, build parks, support eye hospitals, award scholarships, assist youth, provide help in time of disaster and much more.

Join us in making our communities and the world better places to live.

Becoming a Lion

Lions club members are men and women who strive to make a difference in their local community as well as in communities worldwide. Their volunteer efforts go beyond the support of vision care, to addressing unmet health and education needs worldwide.
